Anti-Bias Education
One of our approaches in creating a learning environment that fosters an understanding of diversity and equity is anti-bias education. When implementing the work of anti-bias, children learn to be proud of themselves and their families, develop respect in human differences, learn to recognize and resist biases and speak up for what is right by taking action. Social inequities and biases undermine healthy development in all children, and all children benefit from being made visible and feeling included.
Through the environment where children spend their days in school, teachers take into account the materials in which they provide, images in books presented in the reading library and language used when in discussions with children. We also provide each child with a “family book”, which supports the cultural identity of the children and their families. We invite families to join as a community of learners to meet, share, and examine our own biases and discuss how we apply the goals of anti-bias education in our daily lives and the lives of our children.
